try xvkbd (it's in repos).
works ok for me since it's simpler than gok.

nice howto, i got my toshiba tecra working in no time.
only problem was to find out the port for input devices. but it can be found in device manager,

still no .quake4 dir in my home.
now i can run quake4 but it fails with the error i mentioned above. it still cannot find default.cfg

game is installed...
