iPod's and linux have never worked very good together, specifically iPod touch's but there are programs that might work, gtkpod comes to mind search in the repos for some more, good luck :)
Hi, I don't know if you fixed your problems yet but the logs are in /var/log/ and I think the one your looking for is syslog, I could be wrong so maybe someone else more experienced could help you...
That sounds like a problem with the video driver, a quick google brought me to this page: http://driverscollection.com/?H=Radeon%20HD%204250&By=ATI&SS=Linux%20x86 maybe that will fix you problems.

Does the joystick package or if you want a GUI jstest-gtk work for you?
You can install them from the repositories.
The command to install from the terminal is:
sudo dpkg -i packagename.deb
It will ask for your password but nothing will show, just type it as usual and see if it works :)
