    [ubuntu] Re: tinychat.com

Um... yeah, I don't think I'll ever be letting Firefox run as root.

Surely there is some permission change that can be made to avoid this?

    Thanks for the responses.

    Re: HOWTO: Install BitPim

I couldn't get 1.0.6 to install on my amd64 system, but the 1.0.7 test release does.

  4. [ubuntu] Narrow firefox font after upgrading from Heron to Ibex

I just upgraded to 8.10. The font in firefox has changed to something narrower. I'm confused as to why this changed at all - did the font itself change? The default sans font in firefox is set to...
  5. [ubuntu] Re: Warning in log is eating cpu and hard disk

I upgraded, am on 2.6.27-11-generic, and the problem seems to be fixed. Thanks for your help.
  6. [ubuntu] Re: Warning in log is eating cpu and hard disk

Thanks for the response. Does that mean I need to switch to Intrepid to fix this?

    I'm currently running Hardy, 2.6.24-23-rt.
  7. [ubuntu] Re: Warning in log is eating cpu and hard disk

Sorry to bump, but I just deleted 18 gigabytes of log files (kern, syslog, and messages seem to each cap out at 6 gig). Frustrating.

Seems to be related to this bug:

  8. [ubuntu] Re: Warning in log is eating cpu and hard disk

I've resorted to revoking write permissions on

    /var/log/messages
    /var/log/syslog
    /var/log/kern.log

to keep my disk from filling up.

But the dd process is still working...

  10. [ubuntu] Re: virtualbox fails after update to kernel 2.6.24-21-generic

The latest kernel update broke virtualbox for me as well.

  11. [ubuntu] Running a script upon connection with an essid

Here's the situation, concretely: I use the Georgia Tech wireless network often, and it requires logging in with a web form. It's mostly trivial to write a bash script to do this with wget.

  13. [ubuntu] Several compiz plugins stopped working

I hit this problem during the transition to Hardy (some time while I was using the beta), and never got around to fixing it until now.

  14. [ubuntu] Re: How to manually remove gnome-panel applets

I'd still like to figure out where exactly the panel config is stored, so I could have fixed this without annihilating the whole panel setup.

My biggest hurdle to solving this was not realizing...
  15. [ubuntu] Re: How to manually remove gnome-panel applets

Okay, sorry about the premature question-asking, but I was in a bit of a panic.

    This did the trick:
    gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
  16. [ubuntu] Re: How to manually remove gnome-panel applets

Actually, I'm getting pretty desperate here - if there's a way to just restore the default gnome-panel settings, that would be fine too.
  17. [ubuntu] How to manually remove gnome-panel applets

I recently added a handful of applets to gnome-panel. Gnome-panel is now not responding, and sits here eating 50% cpu time (one of two cores). How can I remove applets when gnome-panel isn't...
