    Deleted.
  2. [ubuntu_mate] Re: Computer hangs and display breaks into horizontal lines

All sorted - nothing to do with Ubuntu of course! I have installed a PCI Express x16 graphics card. It couldn't find a x1 (18 pin) one so I have sawn off the end of the socket to make it fit. The...
  3. [ubuntu_mate] Re: Computer hangs and display breaks into horizontal lines

    No difference unfortunately.
    I've only just got it.
I thought AGP slots were dated? The PC has an 18 pin PCI Express slot, would it be possible to get a video card to fit that, and would it solve...

I've just installed Ubuntu MATE 15:10 on an HP DC5100 which has this 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 04)

I have been running some live CDs on a Dell Dimension 1100 to check which is suitable for a friend to use instead of Windows. What has changed in Xubuntu between 11.04 and 11.10 that stops all the...

[all variants] Re: AWN Customize Icon Bug?

Works for me on Ubuntu 12.10 -Unity +Gnome-session-fallback.
  7. [ubuntu] Re: AWN - launcher taskmanager applet - how do I remove the green + sign on the launc

Previous posters are correct in saying that it can be got rid of by right-clicking and either deleting it or editing it to insert the name of the program to launch, or by dropping an existing...

    [ubuntu] Definitely no window manager

A bit more experimentation - I've tried starting the different window managers with the different DEs:

    Gnome....................just works
Gnome Classic.....requires "metacity --replace &" in...

    [ubuntu] Re: No window manager?

Searching for anything relating to "Could not open device: Virtual core pointer" in the first line in .xsession-errors listed above, I came across a reference to "xstartup" in the page linked to...

    [ubuntu] Re: No window manager?

I took a chance and deleted the .desktop files mentioned in the first few rows of the .xsession-errors file since they referred to XFCE and deva-dup so I thought that they were probably redundant,...

    [ubuntu] Re: No window manager?

Everything's fine if I login as guest.

I have tried XFCE and other distributions on this computer in the past. When I installed Ubuntu 12.04 I had /home in a separate partition which I left...

    [ubuntu] Re: No window manager?

This works fine for Gnome-shell but is no good for Unity as although some things come back it doesn't work properly.

    [ubuntu] Re: No window manager?

There are lots of errors, including ones which mention Unity-2D.

    [ubuntu] Re: No window manager?

I have removed a comment from message 5 because it seems to have caused confusion.

As I said in message three, the problem occurs when I login to Unity or Unity-2D.

For the purpose of trying to...

    [ubuntu] Re: No window manager?

If I use Unity I get nothing on the desktop, no launcher strip down the side whatever I do.

If I use Unity-2D I get a top panel, if I press the left-Window$ key I get the Dash.

    [SOLVED] Re: Nautilus doesn't launch

I've struggled with this apparently complicated problem for ages, and this simple solution fixes it - thanks!

(I'm on Mint 13 MATE, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work on Ubuntu.)

    [ubuntu] Nautilus shows unwanted locations

(Ubuntu 11.10) with Gnome fallback (ie no Unity)

  24. [ubuntu] Re: The panel encountered a problem while loading.....

  25. [ubuntu] Re: The panel encountered a problem while loading.....

No - not since a week ago when I followed your advice. Note that I didn't actually un-install and re-install the software as I didn't know how to do that, all I did was to remove it from the panel...
