I tried your suggestion. The computer icon was restored but the shutdown button didn't shut down the computer.
After some experimenting, I decided to reload 10.04 for the time being.

I am using the Unity Desktop. Does the Gnome Tweek tool work with Unity?
I upgraded to 11.10 and all works well except my top panel doesn't have a shutdown icon. If I change to Guest user the Shutdown icon shows up.
Any suggestions?
