[ubuntu] Re: avconv crop and copy issue

You do need to re-encode the video if you want to crop it, you can't just copy the stream like in your example.
  2. [SOLVED] Re: Ring switcher (in compiz) now requires pressing Enter to select

IIRC I just selected Ubuntu Unity Plugin and changed the "Key to show the launcher" from "<Super>" to "<Alt><Super>" and then it started working.
  3. [SOLVED] Re: Ring switcher (in compiz) now requires pressing Enter to select

Changing the key for the launcher did indeed solve this for me. However, I would like to use the <Super> key for the launcher as well, but at least now I know where the bug is. Thanks!
  4. [SOLVED] Re: Ring switcher (in compiz) now requires pressing Enter to select

    Btw, I'm running precise.

Also, if my description was inadequate:
    1. My "Next Window" keybinding is "<Super>Tab".
    2. I press and hold down 'Super'.
    3. While holding down 'Super' I'm pressing...
  5. [SOLVED] Ring switcher (in compiz) now requires pressing Enter to select

The ring switcher used to select the focused window when releasing the key, but now when I release the key the ring just stays there on screen and I have to press Enter for it to acknowledge my...

  7. [ubuntu] Re: PAE not working correctly, still only 3.3 GiB RAM

Is there perhaps some way to:
see which memory ranges are available for RAM use (i.e., excluding ranges used for graphics adapters and other somesuch), and tell the kernel which memory range(s) to...
  8. [ubuntu] Re: PAE not working correctly, still only 3.3 GiB RAM

Done that. In my BIOS's internal memory checker the whole 4096 MiB pass all tests. In memtest86+ I've only been able to test "3447 M", which passes. I've also removed one of the SO-DIMMs, then used...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: PAE not working correctly, still only 3.3 GiB RAM

Actually the BIOS sees the full 4 GiB, and the BIOS has a memory tester, in which all of the 4096 MiB RAM is shown as passing all the tests. However, memtest86+ sees only "3447 M" (or "3448 M",...
  10. [ubuntu] Re: PAE not working correctly, still only 3.3 GiB RAM

I've done that. I've checked both 2 GiB SO-DIMM modules separately, and I've checked the 3.X (where X was something like 5 or 6) GiB together which is how much memory the BIOS reports there to be....
  11. [ubuntu] Re: PAE not working correctly, still only 3.3 GiB RAM

With PAE one is supposed to be able to address up to 64 GiB of RAM. I'm using the PAE kernel.
  12. [ubuntu] PAE not working correctly, still only 3.3 GiB RAM

I cannot get PAE to work on lucid. I have 4 GiB of RAM installed, but System Monitor says "Memory: 3.3 GiB".

[ubuntu] Re: Have pulseaudio lock the sound device

According to some helpful guys on the #pulseaudio IRC channel the only thing needed is to uncomment the line "load-module module-suspend-on-idle" in /etc/pulse/default.pa and then either rebooting or...

[ubuntu] Re: Have pulseaudio lock the sound device

That's way, way worse than my "unless I can find come up with something better"-scenario of having a small audio app loop a wav of just silence.

I know that you can adjust the volume per app,...

[ubuntu] Re: Have pulseaudio lock the sound device

Now we're talking, that is precisely what I need! The problem is that apps using pulseaudio only use the device when actually playing sound (or maybe also when adjusting levels or somesuch), so I...

[ubuntu] Re: Have pulseaudio lock the sound device

No, I can't. I can't force any application to lock the sound device.

I'm sure it works, but your solution is for another problem than what I've presented.
I don't want to go through all apps...

[ubuntu] Re: Have pulseaudio lock the sound device

That will never, ever work. Of course I have configured alsa to use pulse by default, but there is no way I can stop every oss/jack/whathaveyou-program from accessing the sound device directly....

    [all variants] Any decent alternatives?

OK, so ICQ is out. Does anyone know of any XMPP server that:

doesn't go offline for a while several times a month, and
    delivers all messages?...

Re: Are we going to see Java SE 6?

Yes! If I feel even remotely suspicious I can inspect the package much more easily than I could even begin to reverse-engineer Sun's binary. Anyway, the package I'd use would be made from Sun's...

Re: Are we going to see Java SE 6?

You shouldn't have to. If the package doesn't adjust the appropriate environment defaults then it should be fixed. I've never had to configure any plugin or adjust any classpath on ubuntu.

Re: Are we going to see Java SE 6?

Re: Are we going to see Java SE 6?

You apparently subscribe to the philosophy of "If it's stupid but works, then it's not stupid!" whereas I think "If it's stupid but works, it's still stupid!" so let's just agree to disagree on this...
