Connecting the printer to the network solved the problem for me, in combination with installing the latest version of the driver from HP. (not via a .deb)

Also broken for "HP Officejet 6300 Series, hpcups 3.10.6".
This printer used to work for previous Ubuntu versions, but not 10.4.

Regarding VNC (Desktop Sharing)
It appears that it's necessary to turn off desktop effects for VNC to work from other machines.

Here is a workaround that works well for me.
At the command line:
pasuspender kino
Which suspends pulse audio and provides direct audio hardware access to kino.
Rejoice and be happy.
