    windows 8 can cause problems when dual booting with Linux.

    with 9.04 your in luck . 9.10 does not support
    Why it is showing as amedia device is because it has the window drivers loaded in the device and ubuntu is seeing this as much the same as ausbstick....

    If you have kernel 2.6.25 or later the option module has been patched to recognise and connect to your modem and is just a simple matter of running pppconfig in a terminal.
    sudo pppgonfig
