    a) If you read the man page for sudo by running

    man sudo

    You will see what it does. You sound very new to the OS and I suggest you use it as is and stick to using sudo until you understand...

    The root password is not set at any time. The account is disabled by default and no password is set.

    And you will become root. For security I suggest you leave the root account locked and unused, especially for a system with services like Samba and Apache.

    What are you doing on the remote system that needs the full desktop session? There may be a sleeker solution to what you are trying to achieve.....

    If the system is running OK and all hardware is working then I wouldn't worry about the kernel. Stop chasing version numbers unnecessarily and you'll have less worry.

    Yes the /etc/hosts file is just text. If you want something like this and have many systems then you may want a PiHole system. You can edit the file with

    sudo cp /etc/hosts...

    /dev/sda is the storage itself. a different drive would have a different letter like /dev/sdb
    The numbers are the partitions on the drive
    1 - 4 are primary partitions
    5 is the extended partition...

    Make sure you have the latest BIOS too. If you look online for "click of death" it is nothing to do with Ubuntu and a failing piece of hardware
