Baffled
I cannot find a google-chrome profile in my /.config file in my google-chrome home folder.
any other hints?
Jerry
Darned if I can find a profile setting - I welcome your help!
Oh yeah - I uninstalled and re-installed chrome when the problem initially surfaced - but no change
Jerry
after a routine update about 4 - 5 days ago, the google-chrome window was corrupted, sometimes with a mosaic
of colors, sometimes not. At the same time, scrolling my mouse across the chrome window...
Thank you, thank you Mr. ActionParsnip.
I am back in business
Jerry
This is a little complicated but not outside of my grasp - but I'm gonna hit the sack and
tackle this tomorrow PM.
Many many thanks
tomorrow
Jerry
I did not....I gave your note too quick a read...sorry, I'll give it a try
Jerry
I get
usermod: Permission denied,
usermod: cannot lock /etc/passwd; try again later.
Also, I was trying to set up WSJT-X, a ham radio program and had some issues with dialout (no permission)
I ran: sudo usermod -G dialout jerryw
Jerry
Yes, jerryw is the first (and only account) when first installed Ubuntu

When trying to log into the Synaptic Package manager, it fails.
In the terminal when I type "usermod -a -G sudo jerryw" I get:
usermod: Permission denied.
usermod: cannot lock /etc/passwd; try...
So I tried to log into the Synaptic Package manager this evening. All attempts failed
So I opened a terminal and typed sudo -i
typed in my password and got'"jerryw is not in the sudoers file. ...
Goodness - what a world we live in!
So, one of the very first steps the GUI asked was "getting update info" and I said yes,
and yes to automated updates as well.
That count for anything?

Well this was easy. I was fretting about setting up a new router and made note of all the settings on my ancient WRT54GL.
Bought a Linksys AC1750. Accessed it via the browser (192.168.1.1) and up...
Thanks "Fu"
It was shortly after I hit the "send" button on my query when I realized my error (blush). Oh well.
I see our aging WRTGL router is still available for $40 - it had the advantage of me...
I feel like Rip Van Winkle. Our 7-year old Linksys WRT54GL conked out during a thunderstorm. Looking for a replacement, or better
yet a simple wireless solution. Previously I had my Linux machine...
Ahhh, I've met the enemy....tis me.
I am tempted to simply do a re-install minding my spelling, etc. I have some issues with a few hidden files,
mainly CQRLOG, a ham radio logging program...I...
So it looks like my home folder at sda1 was correctly identified during installation
See:
# /home was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=31b39630-10d3-4910-a80e-6bfd8a999ff0 /home ext4 defaults...
The results of ls /home:
jerrryw jerryw lost+found timeshift
The "jerrryw" folder is empty as I copied all the files over to "jerry".
This is all so messed up that I'm inclined to re-do...
Actually I DID use the manual option.
On my initial try Gparted demanded that I set up a efi partition. So, since I had all the space in the world - I complied
Thanks

cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name...
Thanks Celtic Warrior, and others
I did use "something else" and had the following in Gparted:
sda
sda1 ext4 /home 1000203 GB no format
sdb
sdb1 bios/grub 9999GB
...
Thanks to all who replied - I've been wrestling with printers over the last two days (I won!).
So when I do a fresh install and wish to retain my /home from the previous OS - I designated that...
So I installed 20.04.2 and used GPARTED to designate my solid state drive (with all my folders, files, etc) as /home and did not format it
Now it seems during the install, UBUNTU creates another...
Well you guys certainly have gone beyond the call of duty in helping me!
I'll do a clean install. This little Dell came with a version of Ubuntu on it that must have been designed by committee. ...
