Calling it quits for me tonight. Will spend the day playing around with the computer and will see if I notice anything else, thanks again!!
After a reboot, the error has not reappeared (yet) after opening chrome. I ran the command:
sudo apt-get autoremove
there is quite a bit of packages to be removed. Do you think I should I do...
Also gnome-control-center still won't open. I get the bus error and pop-up that says that the application has closed unexpectedly.
I'm going to continue to play around with everything
Thanks for walking me through this!!!
Everything looks good, except after rebooting & opening chrome, I experienced an internal error. Not sure what triggered it though.. rebooting or opening...
Yup!
No output when running 'sudo dpkg -C' ...that's a good sign, right?!
looks like it automatically started the GUI login page, yay!
I logged in and the desktop seems to be restored, as well as the side bar and top menu bar! The terminal window also opens successfully
I ran: sudo apt-get purge ubuntu-desktop
and the response was that it wasn't installed, so won't be removed.
Running the command:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
...it's moving along...
okay now it looks like:setparams 'Ubuntu, with Linux 3.8.0-35-generic'
recordfail
gfxmode $linux_gfx_mode
insmod gzio
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,msdos1)'
search --no-floppy...
This is what I see now:
setparams 'Ubuntu, with Linux 3.8.0-35-generic'
recordfail
gfxmode $linux_gfx_mode
insmod gzio
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,msdos1)'
i see that line you wrote but that's BEFORE quiet splash, not AFTER..
I just want to make sure I am not removing too much
Just to verify... I remove "quiet splash $vt_handoff intrd /boot/initrd.img-3.8.0-35-generic" and replace with "text" then press ctrl-x??
I'm not familiar with how to boot to grub...how do I do that?
It boots to the GUI desktop normally... Opening the terminal produces the same result, black terminal screen with no way to type
Wondering if I can boot from a LiveCD to restore some functionality... Do you have some thoughts on how..?
When I try to open the terminal... It's just a black screen, I can't type anything
...so it seems to be completely broke now. I can't open anything... The side bar and top bar are completely missing :(
this was the output from upgrading:
