    Materablaster gave you the easiest way to upgrade as you are a new user so
    Upgrading as Mastablaster states it works fine or a fresh install.

    You can use gparted to create new space if...
    Show a screen shot of gparted and we will see. Sometimes quite easy will instruct.
    Gparted is a tool to create partitions if you have never used.

    Try another kernel,when you hit your boot screen arrow down one hit enter and see if another kernel
    installed and boot with that kernel. Always keep a few kernels installed in case one doesn't work...
