[ubuntu] Re: compile python 2.4 and 2.6 on 12.04 x86_64

The first thing I did was just compile it, and it installed!

    However, there was no
zlib, and thus I couldn't run Plone 3, which is why needed Python 2.4 in the first place. Only after I applied...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Installing Python 2.6 on a system with Python 2.7.3

But I'm also having trouble installing. After doing a configure, make complains about missing bits:

Failed to find the necessary bits to build these modules:
    _bsddb _curses ...
  3. [ubuntu] Re: Installing Python 2.6 on a system with Python 2.7.3

Yes, but Python 2.6 has been removed from the repositoried in 12.04 thus it's necessary to install from source e.g. I have to do this too, because I have a virtualenv which is dependent on 2.6.

    [ubuntu] Re: Preseeding - late_command

I don't know if that's your problem, but I suppose it depends om what and where "/tmp/ is supposed ti be during installation. If you mean /tmp on the new install, you need to refer to /target/tmp....

    [ubuntu] Re: Preseeding - late_command

The preseed/late_command works fine, I've now found. However, you can only have one! Haven't tried kickstart, but there's no need to. One just needs to take into account that the installed system is...

Poll: [ubuntu] Re: Web server, ssh daemon not running

Sorry if my tone sounds slightly frustrated, but as I'm using the web server and SSH daemon all the time for sharing stuff around the house, it's a bit unnerving when these services are suddenly not...

Poll: [ubuntu] Web server, ssh daemon not running

Suddenly, meaning in the last few days, the apache server and the SSH daemon on my laptop are not running after login on my laptop.

Does anyone know of a solution? It seems the daemon scripts in...
  9. Poll: [SOLVED] Re: Do you refer to Ubuntu and other such operating systems as 'Linux' or 'GNU/Linux'

GNU is not the license, the GNU system is the building blocks Linus used to build the OS, and which have been used to put atop the kernel and build the OS ever since. In a modern system, this...
  10. Poll: [SOLVED] Re: Do you refer to Ubuntu and other such operating systems as 'Linux' or 'GNU/Linux'

Ah, but that's not the same thing. First of all, you could port Empathy to another operating system, say BeOS or FreeBSD or OSX, all of which may already have been done. Empathy would still be...
  11. Poll: [SOLVED] Re: Do you refer to Ubuntu and other such operating systems as 'Linux' or 'GNU/Linux'

Colloquially, it may be all right to use the term "linux" to designate operating systems with a Linux kernel. It's okay to use when being informal and stuff.

But formally, the correct name of the...

Re: Ubuntu as a philanthropic monopoly?

Nobody criticizes people making money from software. I think everyone agrees that is a perfectly legitimate thing to do.

    Ubuntu as a philanthropic monopoly?

    Have anyone seen this posting?

It exposes a criticism of the Ubuntu project which I think higlights
some things which should concern us (is "free" used as meaning "gratis,
    of no cost" in the...
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Problem instaling wordpress, wordpress says its ubuntu security

If you use the Wordpress package you can get updates through apt-get. However, you can't set up per-user blogs, so you can only use the Wordpress package for ONE blog. This is illogical in a...
  15. [ubuntu] Re: Problem instaling wordpress, wordpress says its ubuntu security

I found out the solution: I had config'ed mysql with "localhost" as my hostname, so I ran this command:

sudo bash /usr/share/doc/wordpress/examples/setup-mysql -n wordpress localhost

    However,...
  16. [ubuntu] Re: Problem instaling wordpress, wordpress says its ubuntu security

I'm having the same problem with Ubuntu server and I still can't figure out a solution. I've chmod'ed everything in /usr/share/wordpress and /etc/wordpress.

    [ubuntu] Re: Weird networking problem

OK, I don't know how to solve this and ordinary users should never have to put up with this kind of issue, so I reported a bug:

    Hopefully, the...

    [ubuntu] Re: Weird networking problem

Alas, it didn't. The fix recommended in that bug report is this:

    # rmmod forcedeth
    # modprobe forcedeth msi=0 msix=0
    # /etc/init.d/networking restart

And alas, it made no difference :-(
