Re: another app i wish i had

Sounds like a fun project . . . my first thought would be to integrate ImageMagick as it has tons of filters and options that may identify the characteristics of one image against another.

Re: Do you watch movies regularly ?

We refuse to pay for cable and have a digital antenna, so outside of a classic B/W here and there the only movie watching we do is on Netflix. Never come close to using up our bandwidth and we use...
  4. Re: the best password manager for Ubuntu (i'm building a list)

^ ^ Haha okay, so it's **two** passwords. :-D Or three, counting Ubuntu login . . . much better than the 500 or so I have in Keepass.

    Re: Database Web app

I think you're likely to have to use a VM or Wine to find a way to develop VB or .net in Linux/Ubuntu. These are proprietary MS languages. Technically you could in something like NetBeans and tweak...
  6. Re: the best password manager for Ubuntu (i'm building a list)

There are so many, it really gets down to preference.

My pw manager is open source Keepass or Keepass XC. Small footprint, you can run it from a USB stick, versions for Windows or Linux (MacPass...

Re: How to generate income on website?

Monetizing web sites alone has been dying a slow, flaming death for years now. But all hope is not lost. Your best bet is cross channel marketing (that is probably not the right name for it.) By that...

    Re: strange gmail.com problem

I would look into the "from elsewhere" and see if it's all in line. Gmail's filtering algos can be strange at times. There are a few items that prevent Gmail from receiving email from a given address...

    Re: About creating bilingual website

What you are likely looking for instead of just translation is localization, known as i18n or i10n. It's not usually enough to just translate the words, there are cultural references and context...

    Re: Inexpensive Ham Radio Recommendation?

Nah, if you're paranoid (and many people I've dealt with are) you arrange to meet at the parking lot in front of Wal-Mart or something. I sometimes do 5 or 6 transactions in a month, buying or...
  11. Re: Javascript for unreasonably busy computer science dropouts?

I don't know if you follow TechLead on YouTube, the guy is hilarious. "Hello, it's coffee time again with Ex-Google, Ex-Facebook TechLead (as a millionaire.) I an **THE** tech lead. Not your boss,...

    Re: Inexpensive Ham Radio Recommendation?

Come to the dark side, Luke. :-D

It has its upsides. My wife has quieted all but the posts about puppies and kitties. Like that. :-P

Marketplace too, some folks try to sell used stuff for $5...

Re: 100 years back in time

Yes but see "General Electric." That would then become G.E.'s problem . . . after selling them the patent. :-D CHA-CHING CHA-CHING! :-D

    Re: Inexpensive Ham Radio Recommendation?

This is coming in quite late, but the title subconsciously caught my attention as I scrolled through . . . Facebook Marketplace. I saw two ads last night for barely used ham radios, one for $10, the...
  15. Re: You can change fashion and clothing with supreme power. What do you change?

And that thing called DISCO . . . lol

Pajamas in public. That's another one, it's a thing now, girls walk around in pajamas and slippers. LOL

  17. Re: You can change fashion and clothing with supreme power. What do you change?

Saggin' pants. No new laws, enough of those already, just instill some common sense and pull your pants up.

Re: 100 years back in time

Get a job somewhere and scrape together whatever I could, then invest it all in Ford Motor Company and General Electric. Then I would take that phone to a patent office and register a patent.

[SOLVED] Re: The programming forum question

As above it's open, how many responses you get will depend on how many Java developers stop in and are willing to respond. Yes Stackoverflow can be rough, I rarely use it for questions, mostly...

[ubuntu] Re: Gimp locks up the entire system

I would first open up the system monitor before launching Gimp and watch what's happening with memory and disk usage. I have an older hardware build due for a replacement with limited RAM, GIMP limps...

[ubuntu] Re: New Dell with preinstalled Ubuntu

I would ask Dell why, you are (should be?) under warranty/support. A really good guess is they just installed Ubuntu on top of their default "install." The good (ish) news is, there may be a Windows...
  22. Re: Creating a backend that supports processing orders placed via the Internet

Precisely. I've been a developer for over 25 years, and therein lies "kinda sorta" an answer.

Mostly it's because they "can't get it to work," or "it's almost there but can't do that one thing...

Re: Simple New Dual Boot Idea?

The dual boot with grub is simple enough, no reason to over engineer it. :-) I have two drives, one Windows, one Linux, the way I set it is to default to Ubuntu unless I tell it to go into Windows....

Re: Create Dual Boot with Win10 FROM UBUNTU

^ I second that one, and it's nice to be able to swap them out when you need to. There are a couple extras you need to do for for Windows 10 that you don't in earlier versions, but it still works.

    Re: Funky little OS stuff.

So GnuCash won't work from you? It was one of the first things I did, exported my QuickBooks files as .IIF and imported them into GnuCash, it works better, easier to use, and of course free. A bit of...
