Do other KDE distros work fine? If not, maybe KDE is just too heavy.
Try Xubuntu or other Xfce distro.

You need root permissions to update Firefox.
Also with Linux, you most likely use the package manager to update your programs (Firefox included). In Ubuntu the package manager is Synaptic...

What wrong with just removing pulse audio? You don't need to switch distros.
Make sure "xfce4-places-plugin" is installed. If it already is, try uninstalling then reinstalling.
Its socket 939, my motherboard is an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe, and I have stability issues just trying to reach 2.6GHz.

Anyways I use Ubuntu and run Windows in VirtualBox.
Swiftfox 3.5.3 using their installer (extracts to /opt).
CrunchBang Standard does include lots of apps, but for the most part, they're light apps. It does try to avoid Gnome stuff.

Check what services are enabled. Also if Xubuntu has search indexing, disable it.

Xubuntu isn't really faster (see sig) :D
But if you install minimal Ubuntu + Xfce it would be faster than Ubuntu.
Don't forget LXDE which uses Openbox.
So the UF allows users to hide their post count. However you can still see the post count if you view the user's profile.
