I've found that this is a problem with intel graphics and compiz you can bring them up each time it happens by installing the compiz fusion icon and selecting reload windows manager from the right...
one of my favorite distros is Linux Mint Debian Edition very Ubuntu 10.04 like its a rolling release and is based off of the Debian Testing distro you should definitely check it out
