Buckey Ball,
Thanks for your help!
I didn't see any errors, but I'll post the output in case you see something as problem is still unresolved.
I guess a better description of my problem is that...
I recently got stuck in the lightdm login loop following an inplace update from 12.04 to 12.04.4.
I almost resolved that from a shell by:
sudo chown user:user .Xauthority
That got me logged in...
Thank you deadflowr,
I wasn't sure if they resided on my hard drive or not -- hence my question.
My Synaptic status filter shows 100's of 'Not installed' packages.
Can I safely remove them (not even sure if they are on the hard drive)?
Right clicking any one only shows 'install' or...
Thanks Bucky Ball,
I got the 3.11 kernel I wanted and am happy with 12.04.
Previously I installed every version since 5.04 I think.
13 is the first version I skipped and I think I might skip 14 as...
kostkon,
Thanks for the reply. I read through the instructions and went with the following:
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-saucy xserver-xorg-lts-saucy...
I recently noticed that the current kernel is 3.11.
Checking my system I find that I'm still on kernel 3.2 which I apparently 'manually installed' at some point.
I have been running Ubuntu 12.04...
lovinglinux,
Thanks again. I now have 11.1.102.62 being reported by Firefox!

Thanks for the reply -- here's the script and Report.
AC
Script:
#!/bin/bash
sudo apt-get --yes purge adobe-flashplugin
sudo apt-get update
Using Flash-aid I have installed flash version 11.2.202.197 (latest beta) and it is giving me intermittant black screen w/sound and no video.
I have tried to go back to 11.1.102.62 (latest stable)...
Thank you cariboo907.
I was finally able to log in following your advice in post #22.

As you can tell from my earlier posts this slow to boot and sometimes complete failure to boot has been bugging me for a long time. I have been running with pretty much all default settings in the...
Check boot settings and boot priority in your bios.
My 11.04 installation messed this up for some unknown reason.
Hope this helps.

I'm going to have to recant as this didn't work for me.
Went to boot this A.M. and I could not boot -- didn't matter how long I waited or if I pressed a key.
I've had to go back to 'noapic'...
Just curious -- what is q'n'c ?
C1E is explained here:

It explains --
C1E: This setting, though it may...
I've been going with the 'noapic' option to boot by editing /etc/default/grub.
If I disable ACPI_APIC in bios I show only one processor core when I boot into Ubuntu 11.04.
Initially to boot the...
Been there done that very recently -- almost gave up on Ubu even though I've been using it since Dapper.
I have the same MoBo with an AMD 4 core processor.
To boot from the live CD hit F6 and...

cheapodonuts,
Flash on 10.04 Lucid wouldn't work for me either. All I could get on most sites was a black box w/o any video.
I went to 10.1 r53 version of Flash and am now a happy camper with...
Carlee,
Thanks for your Flash installer.
My only problem following upgrading from Karmic to Lucid was the inability to view Flash videos from some sites -- others would work fine(?).
Using your...
Lovinglinux,
Would the technique you posted work if upgrading from 32-bit Karmic to 64-bit Karmic?
Thanks for your time,
AC

This just seems to have solved itself.
Vista (virtualized) never asked again about reactivating.

Thank you hardskinone & thezoid,
An intermediate noob such as myself needed one more step.
REBOOT
DUH!
Then I had the -17 kernel working. Was on the -16.
Thanks again.
AC
I switched from Alsa, which worked, to PulseAudio and that also works.
