    I recently got stuck in the lightdm login loop following an inplace update from 12.04 to 12.04.4.
    I almost resolved that from a shell by:

    sudo chown user:user .Xauthority
    That got me logged in...

    Checking my system I find that I'm still on kernel 3.2 which I apparently 'manually installed' at some point.
