really is news to me! always thought vnc was the goto for remote desktop on linux! but thanks for the suggest! In process of giving x2go a shot.
I have a mostly stock xubuntu 21.04 so its running xfce4
adding "startxfce4 &" to the bottom of the vnc startup script did nothing even if I typed the full path.
I saw someone else suggest x2go...
didn't know to post this in networking or desktop but figure the main issue is the desktop.
I apt-get install tightvncserver, I run vncserver set the passwords etc I can vnc into the machine but...

yep. before and after, it tells me ubuntu is using 11G and from before/after I freed up 1% with the apt commands

I have one of those usb sticks that sit almost flush to the laptop and are intended for permanent storage, the problem is on boot the laptop sees this device tries to boot it then proceeds to hang...
for anyone still experiecing the problem it is fixed by adding the following
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="tpm_tis.force=1" and running sudo update-grub
