First let us know what version of Ubuntu you are using, this has only been proven on 10.04 and 10.10
I followed the step provided in post 19 and then I added in the edit's that I listed in my post...
Maybe it due that I am using 10.04 vs your 10.10 either way it is working.

only way to write to a CF in Virtual Box is using the virtual hard drive file *.vmdk
Look at section 9.9 of the help file show you how to make a *.vmdk file.
