It used to be songbird but since they cut linux support I would say rhythmbox or banshee. ITunes is a pile of (insert derogatory word of choice) anyway.

Its down to the theme you're using. People used to have this problem all the time. Use a more up-to-date theme.
Just tried from an ubuntu virtual machine and it works fine for me.
If you turn it on after install chances are it won't boot. You need to have it turned on before you install or enable it after parsing the AHCI hook in the kernel.

Because upgraded packages rely on other upgraded packages that rely on newer kernels........... which require a newer OS version.

Haven't been on this forum for a while and just came across this thread,
I hope you have a speedy recovery and are back to full health as soon as possible.
load from the live CD and use it to transfer files from your hard drive to a usb stick or similar.
You put the CD in the computer and reboot and load from the cd instead of the hard drive and follow the installation through.
You will lose everything on the machine though.
Kworker is what controls the ACPI wakeup signals from the BIOS.
The latest kernel, well all of them since 2.6.35 have had issues with too many wakeups.

You could always use:
sudo shutdown -rF now
which reboots you machine and forces a disk check on reboot.
Sounds like a firewall issue.
install GUFW to configure it
sudo apt-get install gufw
then go to
System > Administration > Firewall
and add an exception for the samba service.
I would presume it would be /etc/fstab you need to edit.
