I've FIXED it. I removed 2GB of RAM, and still had 2GB left which is plenty for me on this computer, and it fixed all the problems in one go. Seems the 32-bit system have trouble with so much RAM.

Ok, what I have done now is install a fresh 11.10 32-bit on an Acer Aspire laptop.
