    I've FIXED it. I removed 2GB of RAM, and still had 2GB left which is plenty for me on this computer, and it fixed all the problems in one go. Seems the 32-bit system have trouble with so much RAM.

    Fresh install of 11.10
    Now I can't get the grub menu, it hangs at GRUB Loading...
    No messages before that, just blurred screen for a second and then all blank

    Xubuntu and Lubuntu are alternatives of Ubuntu but with a lighter window manager, and take up much less RAM than full Ubuntu.

    I installed 11.10 on an Acer Aspire 9800 laptop and it went well enough I thought. But it just doesn't boot up. I tried various tweaks with grub and finally managed to get to a minimal working grub...
