I also had some troubles with ubuntu when running it from an USB stick. You should really try to avoid running ubuntu from a USB stick. Next time run it from a CD.
About your file system...
look out for the graphic cards from ATI.
Many very new models 5000 series are not well supported.
There is currently a gap between the vendor support for newer models and FOSS-software drivers...
