That solved my problem. I've been struggling with this for quite a while now ...!
Could it be the "tracker" application? (It's some kind of file indexing application.) You can pause it by right-clicking on the magnifying glass icon on your panel and selecting "Pause all indexing"....
I think it's better to just fix it. I just had this problem myself, but fixed it by installing tracker-utils, then running "tracker-processes -r" and logging out.
