I tried https://launchpad.net/~langdalepl/+archive/gvfs-mtp ppa's but they don't work either.
At least I found a work around by using WiFi Explorer also trying Airdroid.

How come Ubuntu 12.10 sees and auto mounts my Sony Xperia S mobile phone but Xubuntu 12.10 does not see it at all ?

I have the same log-out issue when I hit enter as well, I am using Xubuntu 12.04 on my Toshibal L500 laptop.
Any news on fixes, I am using the laptop keyboard and a wireless mouse.

Not sure what 'onscreen phone software' does , however if you just want to transfer data WiFi File Explorer works well.
