I've found the problem! :)
The IPv6 DNS (which is empty) was conflicting somehow with the IPv4 config. I disabled IPv6 for the connection and voilá! :)

I do have 11.04, try a manual install of the driver. Download the package directly from nvidia and install as described.
I did it all in a runlevel without X, and it all went fine.
Finally had them time and I went to the bottom with this to find out what was going on.
The apt-available driver is not working properly, and after a manual reinstall (not apt) everything is running...
