  1. [SOLVED] Re: How can I find broken links in my website?

Thanks. I saw this mentioned in several places. You need to add a PPA, but from what I've read, it's no longer supported.
  2. [SOLVED] Re: How can I find broken links in my website?

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't know Python at all, so I'll forget about the Python alternative.

I tested the W3C validator, and it works well. That's a good one!

    That's OK, I don't have...
  3. [SOLVED] Re: How can I find broken links in my website?

    Excellent, thank you!

I don't know Python at all, so I saved the Python version into a file with the header "#!/usr/bin/env python3". I also figured out that I had to install python3-bs4.

    When...

EDIT: After searching for two days, I finally found this online tool! Clearly, my searching skills need improvement.

[SOLVED] Re: What AVIF viewers are there?

Thanks. I've got it working with the other PPA.

I think that I should raise this as a bug, to encourage AVIF support to be built into the next LTS (22.04).

[SOLVED] Re: What AVIF viewers are there?

Thanks for this. I'll stick to Flatpak, because it has version 2.10.28, whereas the standard repository has only 2.10.18. I'm not going to compile the stuff myself — it's too complicated for me :)
  8. [all variants] Re: Manual Full System Encryption has been updated and simplified

This is fantastic first post :)!

Thank you so much for this information.

I was unaware of Lovro Ma˛gon's contribution, so I'll add it to the instructions (assuming that I can log in — the login...

[SOLVED] Re: What AVIF viewers are there?

I didn't because the installation of the PPA gave an error.

However, I've just retried, and it worked!

Thank you. I'll mark this as solved.

EDIT: Just updating with that PPA, not bothering...

[SOLVED] Re: What AVIF viewers are there?

Thanks, Dennis. Well, I'll have to see what the gThumb team tells me, or wait for a recommendation for an alternative AVIF viewer.

[SOLVED] Re: What AVIF viewers are there?

    Quick question, Dennis:

If you go to gThumb > Preferences > Saving, what do you see under Default options?

I see JPEG, PNG, TGA, TIFF, WebP (screenshot below).

[SOLVED] Re: What AVIF viewers are there?

    Thanks for the reply, Dennis.

I see that Manjaro supports it, but not Ubuntu. So, that means that something is missing from Ubuntu — and from the Flatpak installation, because Flatpak is supposed...

[SOLVED] What AVIF viewers are there?

EDIT: See post #14 for details of the bug reports.

For those who don't know, AVIF is the upcoming new image and video format, so efficient that Netflix uses it on supported devices.

    But.

  15. [SOLVED] How do I get full AVIF support in GIMP?

EDIT: I've just discovered that the Flatpak version of GIMP supports AVIF. so that solves that problem.

Chrome, Opera and Firefox all support the newish AVIF (AV1) format.

    Apparently, so does...
  16. [ubuntu] What's the difference between Suspend and rctwake --mem?

In Ubuntu 20.04, Suspend is broken (apparently a bug in Linux), at least on certain machines.

I discovered today that I can use rtcwake instead:

    sudo rtcwake --mode=mem --date=+15days
    (rtcwake...

Re: bad HDD or bad filesystem?

I have read update problems on the forums. I've been lucky in that I've never had a serious problem, perhaps because I use my computer for only simple things.

Thanks for the suggestion. It turns...

Re: bad HDD or bad filesystem?

In fairness, it's a Linux kernel update, not an Ubuntu update.

Re: bad HDD or bad filesystem?

    Good question!

The latest kernel for Ubuntu 20.04 is 5.11.0-25, and this breaks on suspend.
I just booted into the previous kernel, 5.8.0-63, and suspend works!

So, yes, it's to do with the...

Re: bad HDD or bad filesystem?

I've also been having problems with suspending recently, to the extent that I've stopped suspending altogether.

Maybe it's a result of a recent upgrade.

I wonder if it's worth running Ubuntu or...

Re: bad HDD or bad filesystem?

That's interesting, Impavidus. Given that the OP's disk is a mere 4 months old, though, we wouldn't expect pre-fail and especially old-age, would we?

Re: bad HDD or bad filesystem?

    Bad luck, there.

If the disk is so new, the SMART diagnostics should not have been giving reports such as old-age or pre-fail. I think that you were sold a dud — did you buy it privately?

Re: bad HDD or bad filesystem?

That's normal when a system shuts down without a chance to flush the cache to disk. I would be surprised if you didn't get this error under the circumstances. It simply means that the system is...
  25. [SOLVED] When starting after suspend, Ubuntu is in read-only mode and everything fails

Suspend on Ubuntu 20.04 used to work perfectly (well, nearly; occasionally it would power down instead of suspending).

However, recently, it has a different habit. When trying to resume from...
