Well, I was able to remove the nvidia-bl-dkms package from the liveCD / chroot combo. Logged back into Ubuntu and I could see everything again!

I looked in the newly created /mnt/root/sys folder, and there's nothing in there at all. So the /devices/virtual/... etc. folders aren't going to be there either.

Yup, I did all that initially, and it was working initially. Something else has happened to cause the screen to become so dim.
