  1. Re: Weird: bad sectors with Windows, no problems with Ubuntu

Just to give an update, now at 14,471 POH there still haven't been any additional errors or problems. As I said before, I believe that the last error was from when Windows was still installed. I'm...
  2. Re: Weird: bad sectors with Windows, no problems with Ubuntu

There's a total of about 39 GiB on the disk, well into the area that failed before.
  3. Re: Weird: bad sectors with Windows, no problems with Ubuntu

I'm not using it with the expectation it will last at this point, certainly. I just find it interesting that Linux seems to be able to handle the problems with no apparent problems while Windows...
  4. Re: Weird: bad sectors with Windows, no problems with Ubuntu

I'll keep an eye on it and see if there are any additional errors. I'm not sure if the 14395 POH mark would fall under when Windows was still installed. I find it interesting that the...
  5. Re: Weird: bad sectors with Windows, no problems with Ubuntu

    Thanks.

Just so you know, I always do a full NTFS format prior to restoring a backup.
  6. Re: Weird: bad sectors with Windows, no problems with Ubuntu

I've started a SMART test now to see if I can get any results.

I would think that if this were the case, the same would be true of the drive being reformatted to NTFS before one of the...
  7. Weird: bad sectors with Windows, no problems with Ubuntu

Although I primarily use Ubuntu on my systems, I've had Windows installed on one for Flight Simulator X.

The weird thing is that recently the Windows installations have had problems with bad...

[ubuntu] Re: Windows go dark and stall

Since you've updated Firefox, I have to wonder if the difference in performance is not due to the upgrades themselves but instead the fact that you are not running the Firefox from the CD but instead...

[SOLVED] Re: ff not working correctly after update

I've never encountered this problem before, but you might want to clear your cache and see if that changes anything, and maybe check to see if the same behavior occurs with a different home page set.
  11. [lubuntu] Re: data files overwritten and swap partition hosed

    Hello,

Have you used the Windows XP installation lately? Are you sure there are no problems with that which could indicate problems with the HD itself?

I have to wonder if running out of space...

  17. [ubuntu] Re: Linux AMI - Error: sudo: must be setuid root

Perhaps you can talk to Amazon? Without the ability to execute any command, I don't see how you would fix the problem.

[ubuntu] Re: sound problem in ubuntu 10.04

Sorry, I forgot to mention you should restart for it to take effect. If you have or that still doesn't work, there are some other ideas I have.
  20. [ubuntu] Re: Is Ubuntu the right OS for Gnome Shell lovers? Cinnamon is faster? Unity buggy?

To be fair, there is the issue of gnome shell not working that well (at least supposedly), but it does read as a bit of a thinly veiled denigration of Ubuntu.

    Perhaps the thread starter can...

If you get a chance, can you mark the thread as solved under "Thread Tools" at the top of the page?

    Thanks.
  22. [ubuntu] Re: share internet from vbox vm back to its ubuntu host

It would be my guess that you could use internet connection sharing in the guest OS to share the connection with the host just as you would with two physical machines, using an unused network...

Re: data recovery from dual boot system

If you're in Ubuntu, you should be able to open the ISO files using archive manager or 7zip. In Windows, you can use 7zip or Winrar.

[ubuntu] Re: Sending SMS messages solution

This site appears to work just fine to determine the carrier. This page lists the email addresses used by the carriers. You just have to enter the whole number including the area code before the @.
