Resolved! After finding and reading the log.nmbd file I found that an old XP pc in the office which is only used for short periods of time was electing itself as master browser. I have no idea why it...
Delving a bit deeper slowly I tried sudo smbstatus. This gives a few lines response but does refer to ignoring unknown parameter "cups option". Might this be of any relevence?...
Small update. I temporarily managed to get it showing again in Windows Network Neighbourhood by restarting nmbd. However, overnight it dropped again. I will investigate log.nmbd.
Thanks for your comments. Both nmbd and smbd are running and the netbios name is in the .conf. Other settings such as local master are also there. It was working fine a week ago and nothing has...
We have Ubuntu 16.04 acting as a server in our small office. It is basically just a file server to the client PC's and is set up with WINS. It has been behaving fine until earlier this week when it...
Thanks for your comments and advice volkswagner.
Presumably I have nothing to lose by adding users and groups to the server as nothing will materially change until I remove guest=ok from smb.conf.
My existing setup comprises of an Ubuntu 14.04 server acting as a file server to a number of Win 7 PC’s in a small office. Until now we have had no need to limit access to shared folders so all...
I look after a network of Win 7 PC's in a small office connected to a server running Ubuntu. Until now we have had no need for much security as everyone has the right to see all files. However, I...
Thank you BAB1. Whilst my original problem hasn't been resolved I've learnt alot through the processes of testing with your input and found ways to achieve my aims. In due course I will remove the...
I've managed a brief bit of testing this morning and disconnected the SERVER from the network. I then fired up just the TESTSRV and one Win7 PC (with WINS settings removed from TCP/IP settings). The...
I've checked that my Netbios over TCP/IP is set to on; which it is. Enable LMHOSTS lookup is turned off. (My Windows clients are all set to use WINS and are pointing to the SERVER 192.168.1.114 for...
Firstly I must apologise if I've wasted any of your time. For some reason I posted the wrong result from nmblookup. It does indeed return the correct IP address of 192.168.1.140. Quite why I typed in...
nmblookup responds with 192.168.1.114 testsrv<00>
I don't know whether it is relevant, but when booting up this machine it shows the scrolling list of services that it is starting and I noticed...
pgrep -l mbd gives me:-
599 smbd
756 smbd
938 nmbd
pgrep -l samba gives nothing.
Aha, that makes life a bit simpler and saves my fingers a little.
Will do.
I didn't realise it was possible to highlight text from the command line and paste it into an open text editor. I...
Thanks again for your continued support.
I cannot work out what 'user input' is required to get smbtree to proceed past the 'added interface' line when logging the output to file. It works fine on...

Yes, i can confirm that Workgroup is in the smb.conf file. It shows up when running Testparm -sv.
BAB1
Perhaps I chose the wrong word 'malarkey'. I am serious about trying to...
Thanks for your comments SeijiSensei. The older server does in fact have apache so that would explain that one.
My global stanza does have workgroup = WORKGROUP (see my OP) for some reason it...
Happy New Year, and thanks once again for your help.
I am using Firefox on a client PC. If I enter 'server' or 192.168.1.114 in the address bar I get directed to a default apache success page...
Thanks for your response.
I have made some progress :) I found my /etc/hosts file did not have 192.168.1.140 testsrv in it. After changing that I could get to CUPS via remote browser. I still do...
I need a bit of help with samba shares.
I look after a small network in our office of client pc's running Windows 7 and a server running Ubuntu 14.04. This was set up with the help of an...
Perhaps I spoke a little too soon. Today I got another error message along the lines of permission denied to var/log/radicale/radicale.log. Strangely all seemed ok yesterday and I was able to create...
Thank you.
I wondered if it was as simple as uncommenting that line... and it was. All now seems to be running ok. I'm still on a steep ubuntu learning curve and can't afford to make any mistakes...
I think I understand you now. Each client only has one user account on it and no requirement to 'log in'. Also, there are no users in Samba, everyone gets access as a guest. If it answers you...
Thanks for the link to the changes and also the summary of commands to apply.
It all went smoothly until the 'service radicale start' part where I get the response 'not starting radicale,...
