  1. [SOLVED] Re: WiFi connection fails nightly on 5.19.0-43-generic kernel [SOLVED]

This morning it appears that the WiFi connection stayed up all night. I'm going to mark this "solved", although I'm baffled as to how this setting might have changed, as well as why "3" would be the...
  2. [SOLVED] Re: WiFi connection fails nightly on 5.19.0-43-generic kernel

While awaiting some further guidance, I've decided to edit the file /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf and change the value wifi.powersave from 3 to 2. I'll update this thread...
  3. [SOLVED] WiFi connection fails nightly on 5.19.0-43-generic kernel

I have been running Ubuntu 22.04 with zero WiFi issues until fairly recently. Now I find that WiFi disconnects nightly and won't connect until I shut off WiFi and turn it back on. There are also...
  4. Re: VPNC no longer reliably working on Ubuntu 22.04

On this particular desktop, a Dell OptiPlex 7080, it's my only option. I set up the power options to keep it "always on", as it is my primary workhorse.

As a matter of interest, my VPN connection...
  5. Re: VPNC no longer reliably working on Ubuntu 22.04

Well - sort of. Within minutes after successfully connecting, my VPN connection failed. Then, after stopping and starting my WiFi connection, I was able to connect again.
  6. Re: VPNC no longer reliably working on Ubuntu 22.04

A strange thing just happened. I decided to run `vpnc <config-file> --debug 99 | tee <output-file>` so that I can share more of it here, and the command worked successfully. Apart from multiple...
  7. Re: VPNC no longer reliably working on Ubuntu 22.04

Thanks for the reply. As it turns out, openssl is installed.

    root@tiburon-7080:/etc/vpnc# apt policy openssl
    openssl:
    Installed: 3.0.2-0ubuntu1.9
    Candidate: 3.0.2-0ubuntu1.9
    Version...
  8. Re: VPNC no longer reliably working on Ubuntu 22.04

Thanks for the suggestion. As one would expect, there was plenty of output, but the last few lines seemed interesting:

    PARSING PAYLOAD type: 00 (ISAKMP_PAYLOAD_NONE)
    PARSE_OK
    ...
  9. VPNC no longer reliably working on Ubuntu 22.04

I've been using vpnc as a Linux-friendly command line alternative to Palo Alto Network's GlobalProtect for over 4 years, and it's worked very reliably until recently. I upgraded to version 22.04...
  10. [SOLVED] Re: No longer able to mount CIFS filesystem on Ubuntu 22.04

It seems that the mount was succeeding after all, but the proceeding rsync command was failing due to a bad external hard drive.
  11. [SOLVED] No longer able to mount CIFS filesystem on Ubuntu 22.04

After what seemed to be a minor update, I'm no longer able to mount CIFS shares on my Ubuntu 22.04 system. The command gives no errors, but nor does it mount successfully. Here is the command:

    ...
  12. [ubuntu] Re: terminal resizing automatically

Thanks for these recommendations. I'm still curious as to why this started happening with version 22.04.
  13. [ubuntu] Re: terminal resizing automatically

Thanks for the recommendation. It looks like it will install quite a few packages, since I'm using the vanilla gnome desktop and not KDE.
  14. [ubuntu] terminal resizing automatically

I upgraded to Ubuntu 22.04 not long ago and noticed that certain interactions with a browser (e.g. downloading an image, opening a second browser, etc.) resized my maximized terminal windows as an...
  15. [SOLVED] Re: USB Bluetooth dongle isn't being recognized in Settings

Sure enough, after buying a $15 Linux-friendly Plugable USB Bluetooth dongle I was able to see my Bluetooth devices, pair them, and connect. I'm typing this from my Bluetooth keyboard while also...
  16. Re: VPN connection keeps hanging or dropping

A quick update: I've upgraded from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 but still see this issue.

[ubuntu] Re: migration from 18.04 to 20.04

Thanks for the tip. Being old-school, I do prefer the command line over the graphical installer.

[ubuntu] Re: migration from 18.04 to 20.04

I followed the instructions to migrate from 18.04 to 20.04 using the graphical installer, and it was fairly smooth with the exception of a delay introduced by Adobe's retirement of Flash, documented...
  20. VPN connection keeps hanging or dropping

I am running Ubuntu 18.04 and have installed vpnc in order to make a VPN connection to my workplace. I've noticed that whenever my computer goes into screen lock, vpnc either dies or hangs (where the...

[ubuntu] Re: migration from 18.04 to 20.04

Thank you for the reply. I've only had this computer for a few days, so I'd rather go ahead and perform an upgrade now versus later.

[ubuntu] Re: migration from 18.04 to 20.04

Thanks for the reply. I did do a search for "18.04 to 20.4 migration" but saw no matches. Perhaps others can point me to existing threads, which I would be happy to peruse.

    I do have the Ubuntu...

I just received a computer from my workplace that is running Ubuntu 18.04 and would like to upgrade it to 20.04 to take advantage of some features not available in the former version. Am I naive to...
  24. [SOLVED] Re: USB Bluetooth dongle isn't being recognized in Settings

My workplace is a Windows shop. My guess is that they shipped me a dongle that would have worked fine with Windows but not with Linux. A few years back I bought a Plugable USB Bluetooth dongle that...
  25. [SOLVED] Re: USB Bluetooth dongle isn't being recognized in Settings

The WiFi USB dongle I'm using is from "Bros Trend", but is actually a Realtek product under the covers:
