    [ubuntu] zombies

I have 2 zombies that persist across reboots. How can I get rid of them and are they really a problem? They are:
zeitgeist-datah under zeitgeist-daemon and killall underunity/sh. Both are waiting...

    [ubuntu] xbindkeys issue

I use xbindkeys to gain some functionality for my trackball, specifically to define some buttons as keystrokes. Lately, in Firefox mainly, the buttons will stop working. If I look at system monitor,...

    [SOLVED] wrong file browser

I have dolphin installed and use it sometimes, but normally use nautilus. Somehow, the system has changed to default to dolphin when I click on a file rather than nautilus. How can I change it back...
  5. Re: btnx: Send keyboard and mouse combination events with mouse buttons

Unless something has changed, butnx stopped working several versions ago due to the way ubuntu detects buttons. This was not going to be fixed as far as I know. I use xbindkeys to assign the button...

    Re: Chmod Explained

Look at the place values. The first (rightmost) digit is the ones, the next is the 2's and the next is the 4's. To make 3 you would use the ones and the 2's place. so:
    1 is 001
    2 is 010
    3 is 011...
  7. Re: HOWTO: Setup easy web development environment (XAMPP)

You can probably use the repositories easier, but it looks like the reason the tar failed is that you are not on the desktop if the prompt is correct in your example. You have to be in the same...
  8. Re: btnx: Send keyboard and mouse combination events with mouse buttons

BTNX doesn't work for this version. Apparently the changes required would have needed close to a total rewrite so it will not be updated. Do a search for evdev and xbindkeys to find some ways to get...
  9. Re: btnx: Send keyboard and mouse combination events with mouse buttons

What version of Ubuntu are you running? BTNX will not work for intrepid onward. You can use evdev to get functionality for most anything that you can find a key combination for, and revoco to get the...
  10. [ubuntu] Re: 7.10 Virtual Box doesn't work. Gives error about vboxdrv

Bring up the synaptic manager and do a search for linux. You should be able to find an entry for the version of linux kernel you are runningthat has source in the name. If that is not listed as being...
  11. [ubuntu] Re: 7.10 Virtual Box doesn't work. Gives error about vboxdrv

Besides build essentials, you need to be sure that you have the linux kernel source. I don't think it downloads by default and is needed to compile the vbox driver.
  12. [ubuntu] Re: 7.10 Virtual Box doesn't work. Gives error about vboxdrv

Also besides build essentials, have you got the linux source? If you only have the linux binaries (the default, I believe) then the program cannot compile the vboxdrivers.
  13. [ubuntu] Re: help with: user's $HOME/.dmrc file is being ignored...

Sometimes this can be caused by using sudo rather than gksudo on a graphical program such as gedit. Sometimes it will change ownership of the entire/home directory and you also have to fix that.
  14. Re: btnx: Send keyboard and mouse combination events with mouse buttons

I had it set up to do what you are asking, but it was alt and the left and right arrows, not the braces. Maybe try that.

    [ubuntu] cairo-dock problem

I was running cairo in 8.04 and it worked fine. I tried it in 8.10 with no luck, but that was an early version, so I just used AWN. I prefer cairo, so tried it again. It installs, but when i try to...

[ubuntu] Re: keyboard shortcut for volume issue

Just an update. I ended up reinstalling the OS (for a different reason) and the problem is still there. I have a separate /home partition, and did not format that, so it appears that the problem has...

Yes, I went back into the keyboard shortcuts, changed them to something else, then back. Nothing happened. Same issue. I also deselected all of the picks in the volume settings and reset them. I...

[ubuntu] Re: practically deleted entire system

Unfortunately, there is no way without a backup. It might be easier to reinstall if most stuff was lost. If you do not have one, you might want to think about a separate partition for /home. That can...

[all variants] Re: Want to convert from Windows xp to Ubuntu

Will it boot up and run from the Ubuntu CD? If so, then I would just use gparted , set up three partitions, and format all of them as linux. That will clear all of the junk on the drive. Three...

[ubuntu] Re: 8.10 shutting down problem

I had the same problem with a Dell computer. Putting reboot=b at the end of the grub boot line fixed it. The command returns the reboot control to the bios. Might be worth a try in your case.
  23. Re: btnx: Send keyboard and mouse combination events with mouse buttons

I should modify that: I was able to get everything that I used it for duplicated. I wasn't trying the things that you are doing.
  24. Re: btnx: Send keyboard and mouse combination events with mouse buttons

I have the logitech revolution mouse, and have been able to duplicate everything btnx did (except the search button) using revoco and xbindkeys.

[ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu 8.10 Windows Glitch?

If you are running compiz, go to the ccsm and enable the "place windows" plugin. In the options for that plugin, there is a place to set the initial placement of windows.
