Why isn't Windows 10 free to distribute?

This has been making me wonder for a while.

1.) If Windows 10 is now "free"; 2.) and if MS's revenue stream is now based on advertising; 3.) and if therefore it's in MS's interest to have Windows...
  2. Re: Windows 10 Takes Down Register @ my Hardware Store

I was just listening to Tom Ashbrook this morning as I worked. He was discussing the international pushback against American Tech Companies. A caller dialed in and said that he did business in Canada...
  3. Re: Windows 10 Takes Down Register @ my Hardware Store

I didn't either. I guess MS is within their rights to do whatever they want. It may be your computer but it's their OS. I'm very surprised there isn't more blow back, but probably most people don't...
  4. Re: Windows 10 Takes Down Register @ my Hardware Store

I'm glad I'm not the only having that experience. On my one system that I occasionally use for Windows-only software, I've found Windows 10 to be surprisingly buggy. In the past there were always...
  5. Re: Windows 10 Takes Down Register @ my Hardware Store

Yeah, thanks, but I'm a builder (a customer there), not the owner of the hardware store; and that's all besides the point. I know it can be rolled back. They probably called in their own IT support...
  6. Windows 10 Takes Down Register @ my Hardware Store

I've read about older Windows systems being force-upgraded, but have never seen it. Today, at the local hardware store, I saw the fabled beast.

One of their main registers at the back desk...

Re: Great news! It's Fair use

It's not quite accurate to say that the ruling is meaningless, but don't forget that Google also won the original APIs are not copyrightable lawsuit -- promptly reversed on appeal. Larry will take...

My kids and wife are all using HP Stream Laptops, and the laptops all come with the realtek rtl8723be wireless device.

    Re: VOYAGER OS (trustworthiness?)

I've used Voyager for years and installed the latest version on my daughter's laptop. It's not "minimal", but that's not the point. Love it. Has some great refinements that Xubuntu might consider...

    Re: 16.04 Ubuntu or Mate?

Ubuntu Unity, and this came as a shock the last time I wrote it, is (and has been since 14.10) the heaviest DE available to linux. Currently, both Gnome3 and KDE are lighter. I've seen the...
  13. Re: Missing Letters & a Possible Kernel Regression

Just following up. I installed the 4.6RC candidates and am having good results. No missing letters. No flickering panel. The TTY's continue to function. Thanks for those links.

Re: Hard drive issue with latest ubuntu

So wait... is the 4th drive the failed SSD? Though you said you removed it? Does that mean you had 5 drives originally? And what do you mean by whack? Sorry if it seems like I'm asking the obvious...

[SOLVED] Re: Mouse and Keyboard issue Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Okay, but that advice is a Hail Mary. I wouldn't suggest you buy one unless you think you'll use it if and when my suggestion doesn't work.

[SOLVED] Re: Mouse and Keyboard issue Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Just a Hail Mary, but do you have a USB hub? Have you tried plugging your mouse and keyboard into that? This idea is based on your assertion that the mouse works on the Linux Laptop. Have you tried...

    Re: Ubuntu 16.04?

For what it's worth, I was having all sorts of problems with 16.04 until I reverted to an older kernel (4.2 instead of 4.4). I think there's a nasty regression in 4.4 having to do with Intel drivers....
