    Open the configuration Editor
    Browse to apps/gnome-power-manager/backlight
    Adjust the brightness_ac and brightness_dim_battery to your preference.

    cpufreq-set -g ondemand

    The last line in rc.local must be:
    exit 0

    The temperature of the harddisk can be measured with the package hddtemp. You can find it in the repositories of Ubuntu.

    Whether you need to reinstall Ubuntu depends on which distro you want to...

    What is the temperature of your hard-disk?

    The hard-disk of my Dell Dimension with EXT4 is typically 37-42C, this is quiet normal. The CPU runs at 45-50C, which is also normal.
