    The server has a static ip 192.168.1.89 confirmed by ifconfig
    The static IP doesn't show in th Asus Routers table. The router shows the 192.168.1.104 IP

    I guess if all else fails I'll do a fresh install but I'm not very optimistic that will help for the following reasons.
    It's running perfectly fine as long as it's not plugged in to the KVM switch....

    okay, changed back to dhcp and rebooted. Everything runs as expected!!!

    any ideas as to why the static settings worked from the terminal but not the desktop.

    If I use the terminal I can ping 8.8.8.8
    I can also use ssh to my lan
    If I use the desktop - Chrome, I can't reach the internet
