I ended up figuring this out. I put my nickserv password in as the server password under freenode's configuration settings, and removed the nickserver identify command.

I went with the Thinkpad, and I am quite happy with it so far. (Had to disable wireless n, but that doesn't seem to be a problem.)
I went with the 2200, figuring the most basic one would be most easily supported. I got it to work, but I had to disable n mode.
I tried those suggestions, and turning off 802.11n worked.
My version is definitely 12.04.2, and the kernel is definitely 3.2:
