  1. Re: HELP: I've screwed up my Brother Printer Settings and can't connect anymore

Was in Open Printing because already thinking of getting new printer, doing research. Now, have ordered one. See my previous message. When I saw that the printer couldn't maintain a solid USB...
  2. Re: HELP: I've screwed up my Brother Printer Settings and can't connect anymore

Hmm, I think that the root of my problem is that the printer or my usb cable is bad:
    running the command

    sudo udevadm monitor --udev

I start to see output like this cycling every couple...
  3. Re: HELP: I've screwed up my Brother Printer Settings and can't connect anymore

    Mine is the same.
  4. Re: HELP: I've screwed up my Brother Printer Settings and can't connect anymore

And where to find such info. I go to the Open Printing website (http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Brother/Brother-HL-5370DW) where I am directed to the "Printers From Brother Forum", which turns...
  5. Re: HELP: I've screwed up my Brother Printer Settings and can't connect anymore

Thanks. Not having any luck with this. Though I was at least printing through USB before, now that I've removed the ethernet cable from the printer, I can't get the printer detected either on my...
  6. Re: HELP: I've screwed up my Brother Printer Settings and can't connect anymore

Tried this - the most promising idea I've had so far - but localhost:631 is looking for a username/password that I don't know. It's not my username/password on the machine, nor is it the default...
  7. Re: HELP: I've screwed up my Brother Printer Settings and can't connect anymore

That's just the point. APIPA changes to the IP address of the printer to one that is both not on my network and unknown to me even if it was on my network.
  8. HELP: I've screwed up my Brother Printer Settings and can't connect anymore

About 2 hours ago in a fit of stupidity, I connected to my Brother HL-5370DW printer's web interface and mistakenly turned on the APIPA setting, thinking this might help my wife's windows PC connect...
  9. Re: Can I hide "Built-In-Display" and other monitor labels on dual monitor setups?

    Right you are, thanks. Duh.
  10. Can I hide "Built-In-Display" and other monitor labels on dual monitor setups?

I recently, for the first time, tried to use a dual monitor setup with my laptop on Ubuntu 14.04. It works fine except for the annoying "Built-In Display" label on the laptop and the other label on...

    HELP! I'm in EFI-hell

I bought this Lenovo Thinkpad 540-T (64-bit) a little over a year ago. Had I known all the obstacles EFI was going to throw in my face, I never would have. I didn't want Windows, I wanted Ubuntu...

I am going to stick with 1 for now. I am getting ready to move this month from my home of 22 years and I just need a computer that works. Alhough #2...

    Re: Can't autodate kernel anymore

Thanks. Your understanding of the situation is not quite correct - the same auto-update issues occur with 3.13.0-48. Upon booting 3.13.0-48 I have to use wired connection, and put up with the...

    Re: Can't autodate kernel anymore

What I mean is this: The auto-updater first pops up with this popup infoming me that not all packages can be installed.
Upon clicking "Continue", I see that the kernel packages are among the ones...

    Can't autodate kernel anymore

I had been taking the autoupdates to Ubuntu 14.04 faithfully until about 2 months ago when a kernel upgrade disabled USB and WiFi. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1440174. ...

Re: Post Update, problems with Ubuntu 14.04

OK, this is definitely a problem with the new linux image on my hardware. Booting instead with the previous kernel via grub makes everything work again.

I'd like to file this as a bug report, but...

Post Update, problems with Ubuntu 14.04

I took the latest updates that Ubuntu pushed out the other day. This installed a number of things, most notably a new linux image 3.13.0-48-generic.

Now I find two very annoying problems:

    USB...

    Ubuntu 13.04 upgrade woes

    Forgive me for venting.

I just upgraded from 10.04 through all the steps to 13.04. On another PC a botched upgrade led me to a new install of 13.04. That at least works. On my main machine what...
