I couldn't get that to work, but I have solved this. I installed grub and removed grub2 :-)
A brief word of warning to anyone using this - it works perfectly, but my advice is always install your updates from within the REAL system. I have just installed some updates from within the VBOX...

Rotate doesn't work if you are running compiz desktop effects. To see if this is your issue, try disabling compiz and then using the xrandr rotate command. This works fine for me.
