[SOLVED] Re: No login screen at boot

Uh, what's the point of linux if I can't mess with it?? No, I will continue to mess with it until I get it how I like it. The defaults used to be mostly fine, but the update-manager kept saying that...

[SOLVED] No login screen at boot

I've messed up my Ubuntu 11.10 install. It boots part of the way, but instead of going to the login screen, after the progress screen with the blinking dots, I get a black screen with some text...

[all variants] Re: Mount/Unmount ISO through GUI

Thank you for the suggestion, but that's not really what I'm looking for. While that app works, it takes even longer than using the terminal. I'm looking for something that's completely...

[all variants] Mount/Unmount ISO through GUI

I watch DVD's from an ISO all the time. Currently, I pull up a terminal and type that long mount command. I'd like to be able to just double-click (or perhaps right-click) on an ISO in Nautilus and...

Sorry. I got my threads confused. You have an ATI audio controller. So, look for snd-ati or something similar. You should be able to use the tab completion to see your options. Type "sudo...
  6. [all variants] Re: Sound problem - worked fine after upgrading then...

I don't see the connection. Everything was working great with this Ubuntu install for months. Then an update a few days ago broke a lot of stuff. My BIOS didn't change.

    I posted this elsewhere,...

[ubuntu] Re: Wired Internet Connection not working

To me, that looks like a problem with your router. It's not offering you an IP address. Does it work with other computers? Reboot your router and try again.
  8. [ubuntu] Re: X login hangs, no sound, no network, multiple errors

Ok, I can get sounds to play after:

    sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel

But all these commands have to be run at startup every time to get things to work. Why? Is there a way to make these fixes...

[ubuntu] Re: Wired Internet Connection not working

That's just a band-aid. I'm betting you'll have the exact same problems after rebooting. I don't have a permanent fix. I'm still looking hoping someone can help me with a fix that lasts more than...

  14. [ubuntu] Re: X login hangs, no sound, no network, multiple errors

If I run the following commands I can at least access these forums:

    sudo dhclient -r eth0
    sudo ifconfig eth0 down
    sudo ifconfig eth0 up
    sudo dhclient eth0

    However, Firefox starts in offline...
  15. [ubuntu] Re: X login hangs, no sound, no network, multiple errors

I did a "sudo chmod a+rw /dev/null" and that allows me to log in normally. But I still don't have sound or network. I don't think it's a permissions thing for the sound and network since logging in...

Re: Help with ATI Remote Wonder

    Yes and yes.

This page said to add "ati_remote" to /etc/modules and add "blacklist lirc_atiusb" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist. Is that what you were talking about? Cause that worked. Now...

Re: Help with ATI Remote Wonder

I don't think I ever added an ati_remote module. You're gonna have to be more specific, cause I don't see anything in this thread that's obviously about that.

Re: Help with ATI Remote Wonder

I repeated your steps, but I get nothing when I run irw.

The key difference is probably that "lsmod | grep ati" doesn't have anything like your output. It contains one line that has nothing to do...
