this annoying behavior shows up with gnome 3 also and seems to be connected with xbmc.

update: on Gnome3 I have no problem.

You can change the setting on Compiz configuration manager:
Rotate cube -> Bindings -> initiate
To move the cube freely change the "initiate" setting with "super" key (actually windows button).
