Make sure that you have a java 6 jdk installed. Then you can launch eclipse by navigating to the directory where you untarred the eclipse archive and typing eclipse.

Why does Ubuntu only offer Eclipse 3.2? Eclipse 3.4 has been released and has many new features. The Android sdk doesn't even work with 3.2 and most distros support eclipse 3.4.

Sure. I downloaded the driver from the manufacturer's website (Ativa). I copied it to the Ubuntu box and did

(that was the only .inf file that came with the driver)....
