My solution was to create a www directory in my home folder and then create a symbolic link in the /var/www folder that points to the www folder in my home folder.

You might consider trying gyachi. It's a Yahoo Messenger clone for GNU/Linux. The sourceforge page even has a link to a package for karmic. I don't think it's in the official repos.
Add my +1 as well. If you don't believe it, download and burn a Zenwalk Gnome Live CD and see how much more efficient it is than Ubuntu.
Ubuntu has it all over Zenwalk (which is Slackware based)...
