Thanks Botanic, it worked for me. I had the same problem, upgraded from 11.04 x64 to 11.10 and proftpd didn't start because of mod_vroot.c.
Now works fine :P

If you add the module names in /etc/modules, aren't they loaded at boot? You can copy the wl.ko in the same dir of lib80211.ko and than run a depmod -a. Add them to the end of /etc/modules and...

If you have already installed the proprietary drivers, from CLI purge all the packages nvidia-* and remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf then reboot.
