    Whats your current CPU? If its a low end single core, that may very well be your issue. I have a 7600gs with a slow, pentium 4 and I'm lucky to get 15fps.

    If you want to try to manually edit it (back it up and use caution!) you can type in "sudo nautilus" then in the root file manager go to the xorg.conf, open it with text editor and make your changes.
