I fixed this by taking an extreme measure and deleting my .kde folder and rebuilding everything from scratch. Not fun, but whatever, it works now.
Actually, it's a bit more naunced like that. Some of them don't get placed in the right location, and only a few particular ones stay in the corner if the widgets were locked.

I think that nowadays it's generally a good idea to go 64-bit when you can. All (?) new processors that have been coming out for awhile now are 64-bit and you'd be missing the benefit 64 bit gets on...

When I try to run gdesklets, I have a gray window pop up that eventually disappears. Nothing happens.
When I run it through terminal:
$ Starting gdesklets-daemon...

Are you using an AMD64? I do and I have the same problem, and I think many others do too.
In other words, Windows Vista.
