I got Pida working with emacs.
Therefore i had to install the package emacs23. I had another version of emacs installed and in used, but Pida didn't start up with that one.

To remove thunderbird and all configuration files type:
sudo apt-get remove --purge thunderbird
To remove all profiles just delete or move the .mozilla-thunderbird folder in your home...

On my machine i didn't need to install that many packages. Trying to install links2 even ended up in a X Server installation - which i canceled of...
I finally got the vmware player 2.0.3 working here again after the upgrade to hardy, following the steps you've posted.
