The
systemd-udev-settle.service is the main factor which slows the booting down. Since I have been using LVM, I cannot turn it off. Is this a bug from kernel? It was ok earlier.
I posted this question on AskUbuntu, but haven't received any answers there. So, I am asking if anyone can have a look on the question there and give me some insight. Thanks!
Hi there,
Sorry, I didn't read your message while rebooting into the recovery mode. So far, seems I have found the problem and solved it!
When I went into the recovery mode, I used the...
I am using 16.04.3 with 6700HQ CPU and the M100M NVidia GPU. Yes, I have enabled the NVidia non-open-source GPU driver. I feel this is also desktop environment related. Last time, when I enabled...
Hi Bashing-om! Glad to see you here!
I have only one kernel installed, as my boot partition was too small. I'll try rebooting later to see if the recovery kernel option is available.
If I...
Suddenly in one day, I cannot access to my desktop GUI environment. The booting screen stops at a maintenance mode with root logged in to a TTY. I had XFce and Gnome desktop environment installed....
@zerochilli, I like your good news! Let's diagnose it a little bit. The goal is to make your second monitor work, right? Try running
lspci -k | grep -EA2 'VGA|3D'
sudo lshw -C displayThis...
Once in the recovery mode (select Network), you should be able to run command lines. If not working, in the recovery mode option select run command as root (IIRC), and purge the NVidia driver:

I tried to reinstalling, but it crashed! Ubiquity package seems to have a bug. I am not clear what happened. I read some references you shared to me and decided to install the boot loader to...
I think I have to give up. I will be reinstalling Ubuntu 16.04 GNOME-Desktop next. Thank @oldfred for the patient help along the way!
I don't understand that neither. I just appears after I mount the root directory. Have I ruined my other partitions already?
I have /boot, /boot/efi, / and /home in separated partitions, and...
Thank you for the prompt response! I didn't use sudo after chroot. But the error is very annoying. After a little bit of search, I didn't find any useful information and don't know what to do. Why...
I just tried deleting the file, but it cannot recognize my `rm` command. All the command line history can output is below:
ubuntu-gnome@ubuntu-gnome:~$ sudo apt update

Ha, this looks simple to do. I don't know why there was an update process not finished, but I don't think there is anything important hanging there. I will try to delete the /varlib/dpkg/lock file...
Ok, I got frustrated! chroot doesn't give me root permission, not only that, there are all kinds of files missing errors. If I run boot-repair, again it will ask me to close all package managers...
I don't think my LVM Volume Groups are encrypted. Maybe I need to do the following before running any commands in chroot:
chroot /mnt/sabayon /bin/bash
env-update
source /etc/profile
export...
Hi @oldfred,
Glad to have you on my thread! I have seen a lot of your posts regarding boot-repair which are very insightful. Since I am a newbie in this regard, could you give me a few more...
Ok, I managed to booted into UEFI mode, and run the boot-repair info: http://paste2.org/ZvsBb92Z
Boot-repair cannot run normally to restore the /boot partition and grub, as there is always an error...
I formatted /boot partition in Windows 10 as the OS asked me to get more space for a recent Creator Update by formatting 2 "unformated" partitions--I realized later that one is SWAP and the other one...
With all those trials and fails, the NVidia driver eventually worked on the P50 machine. I hope this can give you some confidence on upgrading your machine if you'd like to :)
I think I have screwed up. I followed the steps in this post and used chroot to fix the broken packages. I thought I have fixed the apt-get problem, but when I reboot into the normal mode, the system...
The apt-get will be available in the chroot mode even the original system had the apt-get package broken? I got a similar error with apt-get broken.
I got almost the same problem and screenshot as OP, and found the `apt-get` was simply broken (see details on my AskUbuntu question). Is there is any thought on fixing it? I can have a try.
If...
Hi,
I saw the nouveau driver installed in parallel with the nvidia driver. I remember when I was installing the nvidia driver on my thinkpad P50, I uninstalled/disabled the nouveau driver first,...
