    Re: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

I'm downloading Kubuntu 14.04 now. Am wondering will I need to install The official release when it becomes available or will this seamlessly become the official release?

    Re: Ramdisk issues

You can mount a ramdisk anywhere you want. I personally put mine for Minecraft at /media/ramdisk. Somehow doing anything in / outside of /home and /media seems a bad idea to me though. That may be...

I highly recommend sticking to the prescription given because this is what happens when you don't follow the doctor's orders. What are you talking about. What do you want to know?

    Re: Upgrading obsolete programs

I would assume a long time command line user would know that all that is needed is this.

    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y upgrade

Matters not how many programs to upgrade.
  5. [ubuntu] Re: Cannot install Ubuntu Server from external USB optical drive

If it can see the usb cd drive to boot from then it can boot from a flash drive i'm betting. How did you put it on a flash drive? Unetbootin or any other program in my experience was a waste of time....
  6. [ubuntu] Re: what is the simplest way to burn an iso to a usb

    sudo dd if=/path/to/iso of=/dev/sdX oflag=direct bs=1M

Don't need special programs to do it, it's built in.

  8. [ubuntu] Re: Best to upgrade to 14.04 from? 12.04 or 13.10?

13.10. If everything was perfect it wouldn't really matter but being that it is a new machine you want the latest hardware support available.

If possible could you point to a guide that works on google. I have been trying to do this for awhile but none of them seem to work for me.

Re: Permanent CIFS mount + different users

I don't think you can, at least with the fstab. It gets read well before any user login or selection takes place. What is the endgame here? Each user have their own directory on the server? What are...

  12. Re: moving home from computer 1 to drive 2 computer 2

I have been doing a separate home partition and just leaving it alone with reinstalls but this sounds like a much better idea. I will do this on my next rebuild for sure. Could you also do this with...

Poll: Re: Is Ubuntu very buggy compared to Debian?

Ubuntu pulls from Debian sid and whatever testing happens to be at the time. So naturally it will be a bit more buggy. There is a reason Debian stable is just that... stable. The software is old and...
  15. Re: Where has the System76 Driver for Precise release gone?

I think its great. Where is the problem with moving to a rolling release. LTS is the old way of doing things and it shows. I would rather...

  17. [SOLVED] Re: Proposed 64GB SSD and 1TB HDD partitioning plan for new build. Comments please

Just now figured why not test it. Works fine. Ran my ramdisk backup script just fine and the backup was all owned by root (Run a backup every 10 mins of Minecraft which is loaded into the ramdisk.)...
  18. [SOLVED] Re: Samba share not accessible after apt-update and reboot

path = /srv/share/MYDOMAIN doesn't match (/srv/share/mydomain) in error output. That doesn't look right. Capitalization matters in linux file / path names and such. If you changed it I would imagine...

  21. [SOLVED] Re: Proposed 64GB SSD and 1TB HDD partitioning plan for new build. Comments please

Do you keep old backups or do you overwrite them with the new backup. If you overwrite then rsync is where it's at. is what I use. My scripts run every half hour and my backups are always current,...
  22. [SOLVED] Re: Proposed 64GB SSD and 1TB HDD partitioning plan for new build. Comments please

I'm not understanding why you need separate partitions for stuff like /tmp, and /var. You don't have to make a NTFS to share with your Win XP computer just set up a samba share from a given folder. I...
