Try opening software center via terminal. Ctrl+T to open terminal.

Try through terminal Ctrl+T!

You need to install korn shell program-thingy.

sudo apt-get install ksh
then open your executable file.

I had similar problem with Pentium 1, when trying to install later version of ubuntu. Live cd worked, but didnt install, just hung. So I tried older version, like lubuntu 11.10 and it worked....

I remember once I read article about writing your OS to DVD as it is installed with all packages on your PC. So when something hits the fan you can always recover it all from this DVD.
