  1. Re: Newest generation 2020 notebook - bad idea? Advice please which hardware to buy.

If primarily or just Linux, I would only look for systems that allow UEFI update from Linux.
Even if they say they do not support Linux when you call help desk, if they have UEFI update then...

    [ubuntu] Re: Weird boot issues

Vendor has a support site with UEFI updates.
If you have Windows that will often run updates also.
Note that UEFI updates reset some settings, I keep a list, one system needs a lot, the other just...

    [ubuntu] Re: Weird boot issues

Since from older installs, is this a BIOS install, not UEFI?

The sudo update-grub just updates menu by scanning system for other installs.
You have to do a full reinstall of grub to update grub...

[ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu-Windows dual boot problem

The only choice you get on how to install UEFI or BIOS, is how you boot install media.

[ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu-Windows dual boot problem

You still should run the fixes, suggested so both systems boot in same boot mode.

Did you install Windows yourself in BIOS mode as system is UEFI?

[ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu-Windows dual boot problem

Do not run Boot-Repair auto fix.
With two drives, it wants to install grub to all drives in BIOS mode, but you typically want Windows boot loader on Windows drive and grub bootloader on Ubuntu...

Re: Can I Let Windows 10 Go?

Most of my old Windows systems required me to download the update file, perhaps extract it, and run an exe file to update BIOS. But that could be from FreeDos or Windows. Some even had a DOS image...
  10. Re: Ubuntu server 20.04 installation failed: non system disk error

Looks like it may be a very early UEFI based system.
But for those, generally a BIOS install just works.

Do you have some setting in UEFI/BIOS on boot mode.
Is it the most current UEFI, but...

Re: Install Ubuntu on acer n16q14

Acer is pretty much standard dual boot, but does have unique requirement of setting "trust" on ubuntu/grub boot entry in UEFI to have it work.
    Most Acers are similar.

  13. Re: Ubuntu server 20.04 installation failed: non system disk error

You are booting in BIOS mode from gpt partitioned drive with bios_grub partition.
So configuration looks normal for a BIOS boot.

    What brand/model system?
May need settings in UEFI/BIOS. Or boot...
  14. [kubuntu] Re: Kubuntu on ThinkPad E595 sometimes doesn't boot, stuck in BIOS BOOT menu

I do not know AMD and if that has any unique issues.

But try with UEFI Secure Boot off and still in UEFI boot mode. Do not turn legacy/BIOS/CSM mode on.
  15. [kubuntu] Re: Kubuntu on ThinkPad E595 sometimes doesn't boot, stuck in BIOS BOOT menu

That is warm reboot and cold boot.
UEFI has a setting for fast boot which assumes no system changes. Then it is booting old configuration.
But once you cold booted it should have updated...

    Could be either.
    What brand/model system.
    Some like Acer need "trust"
Some like HP are difficult, but several work arounds, depending on configuration.

If installing in UEFI mode, do you have...

Note that /mnt/Data is not equal to /mnt/data.
Make sure you adjust other commands to use Data, not data.
In Linux case is important, so you have to be consistent on what you capitalize.
