pretty much if you have 4gb or more of ram, 64-bit otherwise no reason for 64-bit.
yea tracker has a ton of issues in Jaunty, also is there any chance that the hard drive might have had an error of some sort? Sometimes if the hard drives is messed up the OS will just thrash it...
it is done with ubuntu server, but you have to run the SAMBA/LDAP services on top of it, so you have to configure SAMBA/LDAP.

The Crossover Linux app contains many different profiles for installing certain programs. If you want to install the apps that the Cross Over makes it easy to install, then cross over is excellent.
what hardware is this running on?
You should just need a 2.5" hard drive. You will need to put it in the computer and that is all you need to do. Ubuntu can install in about 5gb so you don't need to worry about space.
those two commands should have been what to do to check if you have the latest stuff.

try from the command line these two commands
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
That is the command line version of the update manager.
